An Insult to Romanians Published on the Twitter Account of the French Foreign Ministry
The Twitter account of the French Foreign Ministry was compromised, and an anti-Romanian message posted, in the midst of the deportation of some 100 Roma from the country. France flew the immigrants back to Romania in August and offered resettlement sums of $385. This staging of the expulsions as voluntary may have been a mechanism to avoid breaching a European Union law, the mass expulsion of groups based on ethnicity is not permitted.
Roma, sometimes referred to as Gypsies (although some consider that derogatory), have been caught up in a crackdown by French authorities on illegal immigration following two separate attacks on police. However critics allege problems in the attribution of such crimes, making the link to the Roma somewhat dubious. The NY Times has a good summary of the expulsions and the problems surrounding them.
In any case, the cracking of the French Foreign Ministry Twitter account then falls squarely into the camp of being hacktivism, although it is not clear which side of the issue it is supporting. Is it meant to be taken at face value, or as satire as if it is coming from the Foreign Ministry?
